Begin Planning in Advance
Start planning your move at least 4 weeks in advance to provide yourself with enough time to pack and decide on items that are worth bringing and leaving behind. Planning your move ahead of time will give you enough time to ask friends and family to assist you in the downsizing process.
How Often Are You Using Your Items?
The first question you should ask yourself is “when was the last time I used this?” and if your answer doesn’t fall within the last year, then chances are that you probably won’t use it again. Although it’s tempting, don’t transport unnecessary items to your new home – it will only cause clutter and make your space appear smaller. If you’re unsure what to do with your belongings, consider auctioning them off, donating to charity, or giving them away to family and friends.
3Make Digital Copies of Your Documents
There’s no question that your old pictures, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are important. Bringing these items with you will be more convenient by digitizing them. Store them on a hard drive or in storage spaces on your computer including a DropBox, Google Drive or the cloud services (if you’re an apple user).
Assess Your New Home
Determine the size of each room so you can make sense of the furniture that is most suitable to bring to your new home. For instance, if you’re moving from a 3-bedroom to a 2-bedroom home, then you won’t need the extra mattress that you may be convinced you should keep. If you’re experiencing trouble deciding what to move, determine the cost of moving it and ask yourself if it’s worth it. Often, it won’t be because when you’re downsizing, you’ll want to include furniture that makes sense to the size and space in your new home. Once you’ve determined the amount of space you have available, plan storage options that will maintain organization and prevent clutter.
