Tips to Make Moving With Your Pets Easy

moving-with-pets The act of moving itself is a challenging one, but throw pets into the mix, and it can be downright daunting. Just like moving with small children, moving with your furry friends in tow can make the moving process more complex if the right tactics aren’t set in motion from the get-go. If you’ve got pets and are in the midst of a big move, consider following these tips.

Prepare an ‘Overnight Kit’

Include the daily necessities that your pet needs every day, such as food, cat litter mix, grooming tools, and toys to keep your pets happy, fed, and comfortable during the first few days of packing and unpacking.

Find a New Vet

If you are moving out of the area, you will want to have a vet already lined up. Ask your current vet if they can recommend anyone for you, and be sure to take any records and get prescription medications filled before you leave.

Have Someone Watch Them During the Actual Move

Packing and moving are stressful for everyone, including pets. They don’t know what’s going on and why they’re being relocated to somewhere they’re not familiar with. Consider keeping them somewhere as quiet as possible, such as at a kennel or with a friend. This will keep them away from the chaos and prevent them from getting distressed.

Set Up What You Can in Your New Home Before Moving There

Prior to actually moving into your new home, try to get as much set up there as possible. Even if it’s just one room, try to furnish and decorate it to mimic the same room in your old house so your pet recognizes it and has somewhere to retreat to even if all other spaces are completely different. This will help them adjust better and faster to the new environment.

Update their Tag Information

If your pet has any tags (which they should), make sure that its information is up-to-date to reflect the new address and contact information. The same goes for microchip information if your pet has been ‘chipped’.

Keep Them Warm and Comfortable While Being Transported

Don’t throw your pet in its kennel, fish bowl, bird cage, or any other compartment in the back of the moving truck. Instead, keep your pet warm and comfortable in your own vehicle to prevent any trauma to them during the transfer.
