Moving Plants To A New House

moving plants

House plants add colour and interest to a home, but moving plants can be a bit of a headache. House plants require special care during the move, so it’s best to move them yourself in your car.

Here is all the information you need to know about moving plants.

Preparing Your Plants for Moving

Two or three weeks before the move

Any plants that are housed in clay pots should be repotted in unbreakable plastic containers. Make sure the pot is big enough to hold the roots of the plant.

Two or three days before the move

Water your plants no later than a day or two before your moving date. If you water them right before you move, the plants will be heavier to lift.

Prune potted plants 2 weeks before your move so that they will not break off during the move.

The day before the move

If you’re moving during the summer, you should water plants in the morning.

Line packing boxes with plastic bags so moisture will not seep through and weaken cartons.

Be sure to have holes in the box so the plant can breathe

On moving day

Drain excess water from the pots.

Pack your plants into the boxes you’ve already prepared.

If you have larger plants, place them in strong plastic bags to stop soil spillage. Wrap plastic around the foliage to prevent any damage.

You want to load the plants into your car at the end. Leave enough room in your trunk so they won’t be crushed or tipped over.

At your new home

As soon as you get to your new house, move the plants into the house.

You should leave the plants inside the boxes for a few hours.

After a few hours, unpack the plants and water them.

Place the plants in a location similar to your old home, but do not place them in direct sunlight until one or two weeks after the move.

Depending on the climate, some plants may have to be repotted into a heavier or lighter mix of soil.

Moving plants from one home to another isn’t an easy thing to do. However, if you plan in advance and take the proper precautions, there’s no reason not to take them with you. Taking your plants to your new home is a quick and easy way to make it feel more like a home. Don’t leave anything behind.
