Start Sorting Early
Make sure to sort out your belongings weeks before the packing even begins. This way, you will have enough time to think about what to keep and what to toss, and possibly come up with a good solution for your unwanted items.
Create Piles
The best way to start the sorting process is by grouping things into different piles. Separate all your belongings into different categories; clothing, kitchen items, necessities, etc. With each category, divide the piles into what you need, what you want to donate or sell, and what can be thrown away.
Give Stuff to Friends and Family
If you have duplicates of clothing, electronics, or kitchenware, you might want to consider sharing them with your family and friends. If your friend wears the same size as you, they may find good use of some of your clothes that you no longer wear.
Sell your Stuff
Selling some of your items is a great way to make some extra cash. A yard sale is probably the easiest and quickest way to make some money off of your unwanted items. Another option could be to post your belongings on sites such as eBay, Facebook, and other online listings.
Donate Your Stuff
If you don’t have time for a yard sale, you could simply just donate your items to places like Goodwill, Red Cross, The Salvation Army, etc.
Find a Storage Unit
When you’re downsizing, sometimes you might need to temporarily keep your items in a storage facility rather than discarding or selling them. Or, perhaps there are some items that just don’t fit into your new home but they hold sentimental value. Whatever the case may be, a temporary storage solution is a great option.
